Shahrokh Shariat honored with University of Jordan Science Prize

(Vienna, 30-03-2023) The Head of the Department of Urology at MedUni Vienna and University Hospital Vienna, Shahrokh Shariat, was recently awarded the UJ Science Prize by the University of Jordan.

Founded in 1962, the University of Jordan (UJ) is the leading university in Jordan. UJ has been ranked among the top ten universities in the Arab world and the top 650 worldwide. This is according to the international QS Global World Rankings for 2022. The 2022 UJ Science Award was given for exceptional research contributions that led to discoveries and innovations in urological patient care.

About the person
Shahrokh Shariat moved to Vienna from Tehran (Iran) as a child, graduated from high school here and studied chemistry and mathematics at the Federal Polytechnic Institute in Lausanne, but then transferred to MedUni Vienna to study medicine. After earning his doctorate, Shariat went to the U.S., completed a research fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and a urology residency at the University of Texas at Dallas. At Memorial Sloan-Kettering Center in New York, Shariat specialized in urologic oncology. He has headed the Department of Urology at MedUni Vienna and University Hospital Vienna since June 2013 and the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) at the two institutions since September 2022.

Shariat has authored a total of over 1860 peer-reviewed publications and holds four patents developed based on his research in prostate and bladder cancer. His Scopus h-index (Hirsch factor) is 124, and he is also the recipient of numerous national and international awards including the 2014 EAU Crystal Matula Award and the 2017 AUA Gold Cystoscope Award.

Shariat is an adjunct professor at Cornell University in New York, the University of Texas at Dallas, Charles University in Prague, the First State Medical Sechenov University in Moscow and Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. He is also an Honorary Professor of the University of Amman (Jordan) and an Honorary Doctor of the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest, and Semmelweis University, Budapest.
