Christoph Zielinski officially appointed Head of Vienna Cancer Center
(Vienna, 5 September 2017) Last May saw the establishment of Vienna Cancer Center (VCC), a unique collaboration between Vienna Hospital Association (KAV), the Medical University of Vienna and Vienna General Hospital and Christoph Zielinski, Head of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Vienna (CCC), has now been officially appointed Head of the VCC. In a ceremony held in the rectorate of MedUni Vienna, the celebrated oncologist was presented with his letter of appointment by Richard Gauss, Head of Government Department 24 for Health and Social Planning, in the presence of MedUni Vienna Rector Markus Müller and Vienna General Hospital Director, Herwig Wetzlinger.
The VCC will combine the cancer treatment expertise of the five cancer centres belonging to the Vienna Hospital Association (KAV), MedUni Vienna, Vienna General Hospital and the Vinzenz Group's St. Josef Hospital. This collaboration is the only one of its kind in Austria. It will serve to enhance and strengthen Vienna's position as a scientific and research location and will make Vienna one of the most important cancer research centres in Europe. This institution will make it possible to conduct even more, much larger-scale cancer-related studies in the future.
"Due to the greater collaboration between experts provided by the Vienna Cancer Center, cancer patients will benefit directly from scientific advances within the framework of clinical trials," emphasised Christoph Zielinski, Head of the Department of Medicine I, Vienna General Hospital/MedUni Vienna and the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Vienna General Hospital and MedUni Vienna, which serves as an model for the Vienna Cancer Center.
