The Medical University of Vienna mourns the loss of Univ. Prof. Dr. Klaus Wolff, who died on 20 December 2019. Klaus Wolff, Director of the Department of Dermatology from 1981 until 2004, is regarded as one of the icons of international dermatology. Born in Hermannstadt/Siebenbürgen in 1935, Klaus Wolff studied medicine at the University of Vienna, going on to work at the former Department of Dermatology I and at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and Harvard University in Boston. In 1976, he was appointed Clinical Director at the University of Innsbruck. He subsequently took up an appointment at the University of Vienna in 1981. In addition to his outstanding research work, which led to the identification of pathomechanisms of skin diseases and the development of new treatments, he was an enthusiastic and highly regarded teacher of many generations of pupils and students and was the co-editor of an international standard reference work on dermatology. Under his management, the Department became one of the world's leading university departments of dermatology.
