Wolf Eilenberg awarded Finlandia Prize by the Association of International Vascular Surgeons

(Vienna, 20 March 2019) The Association of International Vascular Surgeons has awarded the Finlandia Prize to Wolf Eilenberg from MedUni Vienna's Division of Vascular Surgery for his work on neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin. This will be the third time in succession that Eilenberg has won this award.

This prize has been awarded since 1974 for the best scientific work by a trainee vascular surgeon. Hitherto, the maximum number of times the prize has been awarded to the same person is three. Wolf Eilenberg is now the first person to win the prize for MedUni Vienna three times in a row. Under the supervision of Christoph Neumayer (acting Head of the Division of Vascular Surgery) and Svitlana Demyanets (Department of Laboratory Medicine) Wolf Eilenberg has produced a total of four top publications, showing that the protein neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin (NGAL) would appear to be a suitable marker for vulnerable plaque in carotid artery stenosis. In future, this could be used to identify high-risk patients, thereby considerably reducing their stroke risk by means of early surgical treatment.

About Wolf Eilenberg
Wolf Eilenberg is a junior doctor at the Department of Surgery (Division of Vascular Surgery) at MedUni Vienna within Vienna General Hospital. He studied medicine at MedUni Vienna, graduating in 2010. Since 2011, he has been conducting research into the clinical relevance of inflammatory processes of atherosclerosis in carotid artery stenosis. During his PhD studies, Wolf Eilenberg took the "Vascular Biology" (n094) course at the Division of Vascular Surgery, under the supervision of Christoph Neumayer.
