Congenital heart defects are the most common organ malformations in newborns. Statistically, around 7-10 children out of 1000 are affected.
However, not every child has a severe heart defect; the most common is a small hole in the ventricular septum (VSD, ventricular septal defect), which can also close on its own as the child grows. The most important heart defects are listed in the table below according to incidence.
