The working language for the Ph.D. study in basic medical research is English; therefore, all documents and paperwork must be written and submitted in English. Information and documents relating to the employment relationship with MedUni Wien are primarily available only in German.
If English is not your first language, you need to demonstrate a level of English language competency that will enable you succeed in your studies. Our Ph.D. study asks for a minimum proficiency requirement standard of English level B2. We need to verify your qualifications; therefore, if your certificates are not in English, you must also submit a certified translation. The language competency proof must be provided for the first time at admission. The following qualification verifications or certificates are accepted by university:
Evidence of level B1 (no expiration date)
Successful graduation from high school with an examination in English at a recognized domestic or foreign educational institution.
Evidence of level C1 (no expiration date)
Successful completion of a Bachelor's or Master's degree from a recognized domestic or foreign educational institution where English as the working and teaching language.
Certificates level B2 (not older than 3 years from the date of the examination)
- OEFL: ibt (internet-base): at least 87 points
- IELTS: Overall Band Score: 6.5
- Cambridge English First Certificate (FCE) - from Grade C (at least 160 points)
- Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): Result Level B2
- Proof of language competence from a university language center at level B2
- Certificates level C1 TOEFL: ibt (internet-base): at least 95 points
- IELTS: Overall Band Score: 7
- Cambridge English - Advanced: from Grade C (at least 180 points)
- Cambridge English - Proficiency: result from Grade C
- Proof of language competence from a university language center at level C1.
Certificate Level C1 (not older than 3 years from the date of the examination)
- TOEFL: ibt (internet-base): at least 95 points
- IELTS: Overall Band Score: 7
- Cambridge English - Advanced: from Grade C (at least 180 points)

To avoid any unnecessary delays, please have your certificates ready for admission. A certificate of enrolment can only be issued after you show proof of language proficiency.
