(Vienna, 19 October 2022) MedUni Vienna's Institute of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research has been named a Centre of Excellence for Quantitative Digital Microscopy. The research facility at MedUni Vienna's Centre for Pathophysiology, Infectiology and Immunology has thus been recognised by the manufacturer TissueGnostics as a global leader in the use of this technology, known as the TissueFAXS platform.

Quantitative digital microscopy has been integrated into research activities at MedUni Vienna's Institute of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research (IPA) for over 12 years. The Institute was one of the first at Medical University Vienna to implement this innovative technology. Using quantitative digital microscopy, new biomarkers were discovered in numerous research projects and new strategies for stratifying patients were proposed. The technology has served as the basis for research projects in a variety of research fields including tumour research, tumour immunology, immunology, allergology, bone research and placenta research.

Due to its outstanding research performance measured by its number of scientific publications, the Institute of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research was named a Centre of Excellence for Quantitative Digital Microscopy by the TissueGnostics. The institute proved to be a world leader in the use of this technology, the so-called TissueFAXS platform, for research excellence. More than 45 scientific publications, produced within the framework of more than 10 innovative research projects, provided the foundation for this award.

The TissueFAXS platform is a state-of-the-art digital microscopy system that both enables the automatic digitisation of stained tissue sections and provides special software for their quantitative analysis. During the analysis, the information contained in the tissue, such as the number of marker-positive cells in a specific tissue section, is broken down to the individual cell level and converted into numerical values. These can then be used for further statistical analyses within the framework of basic research projects and translational projects.

The platform was developed in 2003 by the Austrian company TissueGnostics and has since become one of the world's leading technologies in the field of quantitative digital microscopy.

The IPA's TissueFAXS experts, Diana Mechtcheriakova and Isabella Ellinger, are part of the Austrian Bioimaging Initiative, where they represent TissueFAXS-based tissue cytometry at the national and international level.
