Forensic medicine is the application of medical science in the service of people and of truth. From a historical point of view, this discipline has developed and metamorphosed from the "Detective with a scalpel" from crime fiction to become a high-tech, multidisciplinary forensic science.

Forensic medical research at MedUni Vienna includes both independent research and also the adaptation, implementation and validation of scientific findings from other fields of expertise for specific forensic purposes. Forensic research is high-level university research with an international orientation. Applied research addresses specific official matters (e.g. identifying people from DNA analysis, detecting the presence of poisons, assessing whether drivers are impaired by drugs or medication), which cannot be addressed in this form by other scientific disciplines.
