Since 1971 there has been a Department of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy in Vienna, in the place where Sigmund Freud lived, worked and developed psychoanalysis more than 100 years ago.
Psychoanalysis has now developed into an internationally established science dedicated to the human psyche, its development, its disorders and their treatment. It also offers theories about society and culture. It has shaped the idea of man (not only) in our culture and has spawned a number of related sciences.
The Department's priorities lie in research, clinical services and teaching of psychotherapeutic theories and treatment methods, differential diagnosis and indication for psychotherapy using certain psychotherapeutic techniques, treatment and accompanying measures for patients with severe personality disorders and the application of psychoanalysis to social and cultural phenomena.
