Health Insurance

Before travelling to Austria, we recommend to enquire with the health insurance provider in the home country if (resps. under which conditions) the foreign national insurance carriers will cover the costs for medical treatment of acute illness in Austria and procure the forms that may be necessary.

Students who have a valid national health insurance in their home country can obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from their health insurance provider in their country of origin upon application. With this card they will have access to all medically necessary public health services in Austria (at the same conditions and the same costs). However, visits to doctors that are not due to acute conditions (e.g. medical check-ups) are not covered. We therefore recommend to additionally take out a travel health insurance (also to have repatriation costs covered).

In principle, it is required to take out a travel health insurance for the whole duration of stay. The insurance must be valid in Austria and provide sufficient cover for various health issues (insurance cover well over 30,000 Euro including guarantee to cover possible recovery and repatriation costs).

                 a)     stays up to 6 months

In principle, a travel health insurance must be taken out to enter Austria with a visa as well as for the whole duration of your stay. Please note that this insurance must be valid in Austria and provide sufficient cover for various health issues (insurance cover well over 30,000 Euro including guarantee to cover possible recovery and repatriation costs).

           b)   stays longer than 6 months

In principle, travel health insurance must be taken out to enter Austria (valid in Austria and insurance cover well over 30,000 Euro including guarantee to cover possible recovery and repatriation costs).

Third-country nationals will only be able to obtain a residence title if they can additionally provide proof of having a "health insurance covering all risks". The required travel health insurance is only sufficient for the period until a “health insurance covering all risks” can be taken out after entry.

In case of a valid national health insurance in a country that has concluded a social insurance agreement with Austria (Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey) please contact your health insurance provider in your home country regarding the required
forms.
