The Structure of the Doctoral Programme in Applied Medical Science N790 at MedUni Vienna.

The Doctoral Programme is organised in interdisciplinary thematic programmes that gather interested university members of individual organizational units / departments. The goal is to offer a comprehensive and high-quality study programme in the respective subject areas. The doctoral candidates compose their thesis project within the duration of the programme and additionally attend the required courses.

During the programme a doctoral thesis has to be elaborated while attending and completing courses. All the courses and the doctoral thesis are allocated to thematic programmes.

One of these thematic programmes must be selected and matched with the theme of the planned thesis. Courses offered by other thematic programmes can be taken as well as long as they fit to the scientific background of the thesis project.

It is highly recommended to contact the programme coordinator of the thematic programme you are interested in, prior to admission to PhD studies in order to get more detailed information about the thematic programme.

The propaedeutics are an important part of the studies. They have to be completed by the end of the fourth semester and comprise a choice of groundbreaking medical and basic courses, of which six semester hours are obligatory.

There is mandatory one semester hour in each

  • "Ethic and Good Scientific Practice" and
  • "Project management and intellectual property rights".

Four semester hours can be chosen from a pool of other courses. The selection has to be done under the supervision of the thesis committee and the programme coordinator and is dependent on the undergraduate education and the selected thematic programme.
