The program Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Disease provides cutting-edge research training and education in different fields of cardiovascular and pulmonary medicine. The program is committed to train and prepare students for careers tand to prepare students  for careers that combine biomedical research and clinical practice in cardiovascular and pulmonary medicine.

Cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Western societies. These disorders include heart failure, coronary heart disease, arrhythmias, peripheral artery disease, cerebro-vascular disease, structural heart disease, asthma, chronic obstructive and inflammatory airway disease, interstitial lung disease and bronchial carcinoma. Given the prevalence of these pathologies a doctoral program focussing on disease mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular and pulmonary disease is highly relevant. A main goal of this program is the translation of basic science concepts into the clinical application. In order to achieve this goal scientists from various areas of basic and clinical research were invited to join this program.  These scientists will teach students in basic science and clinical medicine.

For example, basic laboratory techniques comprising protein biochemistry, molecular biology, molecular imaging and animal experimentation will be linked to clinical epidemiology, pathophysiology, molecular diagnostics, and medical as well as interventional and surgical therapies. In summary, the final goal of this program is to educate independent researchers in cardiovascular and pulmonary translational medicine.
