Christiane Druml participated with an invited lecture at The World Health Organisation “Scoping meeting on Ethics of Vector-Borne Diseases” in Geneva, Switzerland on 23-24 February 2017 under the overall guidance of Ties Boerma, Director of the WHO Department of Health Statistics and Informatics within the Innovation, Information, Evidence and Research Cluster at WHO HQ, jointly with the Vector and Ecology Management Unit in the Department of Neglected Tropical Diseases.
The meeting was dedicated to vector-borne diseases which are associated with large disease burdens, particularly in poor and vulnerable communities. These diseases’ unique transmission by vectors provides opportunities for distinct public health interventions and gives rise to unique ethical issues. These issues, along with more general ethical considerations in VBD research and control, have not yet been comprehensively explored. The meeting was convened with the eventual aim of producing WHO Guidance on the ethics of vector-borne disease.
