Family planning for women is often pushed back in research. Fixed-term contracts and positions of power in the science system are often the main reasons for this. In the episode „Compatibility of family and science“ in the „Die Wissen Schafft“ podcast, Katharina Bastl explains how she continued in science during maternity leave, how she and her husband set up the Vienna Pollen Service and what tips she would like to give to other colleagues.

With the start of the hazel and alder pollen season in 2024, pollen allergy sufferers must prepare for the first pollen concentrations and thus also allergy symptoms. The MedUni Vienna’s Pollen Service Vienna provides ongoing information about the current situation in the federal capital on its website. The service is managed by Katharina and Maximilian Bastl. The research couple was visited at their workplace, the so-called provocation chamber, at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology ash the General Hospital Vienna and interviewed at the start of the new service.
