Master’s Programme in Medical Informatics at MedUni Vienna

Admission Requirements


Admission to the Master’s program in Medical Informatics requires the completion of a relevant bachelor’s degree or another relevant degree at least at the same level of higher education from a recognized domestic or foreign postsecondary educational institution.

A degree program is considered relevant if at least 120 ECTS credits have been earned in a technical field, such as computer science, mathematics, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, etc., of which at least

1. 15 ECTS credits in mathematics and statistics, with knowledge, skills, and competencies corresponding to the modules “Algebra and Discrete Mathematics,” “Analysis,” and “Statistics and Probability Theory” in the Bachelor’s program in Computer Science at TU Wien;

2. 25 ECTS in algorithms, data structures, and programming, with knowledge, skills, and competencies corresponding to the modules “Algorithms and Data Structures,” “Introduction to Programming,” as well as, for example, “Database Systems,” “Programming Paradigms,” “Software Engineering,” “Parallel Computing,” or “Operating Systems” from the Bachelor’s program in Computer Science at TU Wien;

3. 15 ECTS credits in the theoretical, technical, and practical fundamentals of computer science, covering knowledge, skills, and competencies corresponding to the “Computer Science Ways of Thinking” module, as well as, for example, “Fundamentals of Digital Systems,” “Theoretical Computer Science,” “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence,” or “Introduction to Machine Learning” from the Bachelor’s program in Computer Science at TU Wien.

To compensate for significant differences in academic focus, supplementary exams totaling a maximum of 30 ECTS credits may be required, which must be completed by the end of the second semester of the master’s program. Up to 4.5 ECTS of these may be applied toward the “Elective Courses and Transferable Skills” module as elective courses, but not as transferable skills.

Graduates of bachelor’s programs in the field of Computer Science at Austrian universities are admitted without having to take supplementary exams.

The language of instruction is English. Admission to the Master’s program in Medical Informatics requires proficiency in English. Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate the required language proficiency upon admission.

Pursuant to Section 63(10) of the University Act (UG), proficiency in the English language is deemed to have been demonstrated by the following evidence:

1. Successful completion of a high school graduation exam in English at a school in a member state of the European Union or the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, or Canada.

2. Completion of a degree program lasting at least three years, with English as the language of instruction, at a recognized domestic or foreign postsecondary educational institution, provided that the institution is located in a member state of the European Union or the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, or Canada.

3. Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): Level B2 (at least 160 points).

4. Cambridge English First Certificate (FCE): Grade C or higher (at least 160 points).

5. TOEFL iBT (Internet-based): at least 87 points.

6. IELTS Academic: Overall Band Score of at least 6.5 points.

7. Proof of language proficiency from a university language center at a minimum of Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages at a university in a member state of the European Union or the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, or Canada.

8. An “IB Diploma” in accordance with the regulations of the “International Baccalaureate Organization,” provided that the “IB Diploma” includes the subject of English (grade 5 or higher).

9. Successful completion of the supplementary English exam as part of a preparatory course at an Austrian university.

10. Successful completion of the English exam as part of an entrance qualification exam at an Austrian university.

The certificates listed in items 3) through 7) are accepted for a period of two years from the exam date. Older certificates are no longer considered sufficient proof. The certificates listed in items 1), 2), and 8) through 10) are valid indefinitely.

Some elective courses may be offered in German. For these, German language proficiency at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is recommended.

  • Verification of qualifications for university entrance (secondary school leaving qualification)
  • Proof of acquired degrees in Medical Informatics 
  • Proof of other university courses or other potentially relevant training for admission: Record of study with all teaching units, volume of hours, examination results 
  • Proof of right of enrolment or continuation of studies (only applies to non-EU countries)
