A new Ph.D. program at MedUni Vienna

The immune system protects our body from external and internal threats. The elimination of these threats or a misdirected attack on the body's own structures inevitably leads to tissue damage, which can have a negative impact on our health. In our new Ph.D. program SHIELD, we are dedicated to finding ways to protect tissue integrity because we know how many people are affected by autoimmune diseases, infections and cancer.  Our new Ph.D. program focuses on interdisciplinary projects that address this topic from different perspectives. Our research will seamlessly combine basic and clinical research methods with data science. Each of the eleven PI brings a wealth of expertise and passion to their respective interdisciplinary projects, igniting a collective quest for knowledge and innovation in this highly specialized field. The Faculty Board brings together scientists from diverse backgrounds, ranging from pathogenesis and tumor elimination to autoimmunity and self-destruction to cellular and molecular mechanisms. Clinical, basic and data research are used in combination, enabling the SHIELD program to promise an unparalleled research and Ph.D. experience.

About the PhD program

Supported by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), SHIELD stands as a beacon of excellence, providing students with state-of-the-art training and know-how to tackle fundamental biomedical questions head-on. Embedded in our program, students gain cutting-edge expertise in wet-lab techniques and data science methodologies, equipping them with the tools to develop the precision medicine approaches of the future. All PhD studentships within the SHIELD program are fully funded. SHIELD´s PhD candidates will be integrated into well-established research teams and formally enrolled at MedUni Vienna. As an early-stage researcher, you will be able to devote your full attention and time to your original research and your training as a doctoral student.

Training plan for SHIELD PhD candidates

But SHIELD offers more than academic rigor; it fosters a vibrant community of scientists united by their passion for scientific inquiry. As a member of our close-knit network, you'll have access to a wide range of opportunities to develop soft skills and exchange collaborations abroad, enriching your academic journey and broadening your horizons. Furthermore, your work won't just be confined to the laboratory; it will have real-world implications, potentially paving the way for groundbreaking treatments and therapies. The research conducted within our program has the power to transform lives, offering hope to those affected by autoimmune diseases, infections, and cancer. The interdisciplinary nature of our program means that you'll gain expertise not only in laboratory techniques and data science but also in communication, collaboration, and leadership—skills that are invaluable in any career path you choose to pursue.
