Biosketch Lorenzo Moretta
Lorenzo Moretta currently serves as Director of the Immunology Area at the Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù (Rome). Besides the many positions he held, he was Full Professor of General Pathology and Pathophysiology of the University of Genoa Medical School (1994 – 2015), Scientific Director of the Istituto Giannina Gaslini (Genoa) (2000 – 2015), President of the European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS, 2009-2018), just to name a few. Professor Moretta’s research studies are considered seminal in the field of immunology. He first identified T lymphocyte subpopulations in humans, a discovery which helped lay the foundations for understanding immune system disorders such as immunodeficiencies and autoimmune diseases. At present, he continues to pursue basic and applied research in the area of tumor immunology, as well as bone marrow transplantation for the cure of high risk acute leukaemias and of selected immunodeficiencies. He is the author of nearly 1,000 publications in extenso, that result in a total impact factor of approximately 4,000, more than 80,000 citations and an h-index of 150 (Google Scholar). Professor Moretta was for many years the most cited Italian researcher.
