Vienna is the cultural, economic and political heart of Austria.
Vienna - “The City of Music” - lies between the foothills of the Alps and the Carpathians and is surrounded by the Vienna Woods (“Wienerwald”). It is pervaded by Europe’s second longest river, the Danube, cutting its path through the mountains.
The core of Vienna, the Innere Stadt (inner city), is characterized by its narrow alleys and impresses with its medieval, baroque and gothic monuments. It is framed by the Ringstraße, a circular road aligned with grand buildings and parks. Even traditional two-horse carriages called fiacres still offer rides through Vienna, driven by a bowler-hatted coachman.
While being a lively and innovative city, Vienna is cherished because of its art of living. Viennese people enjoy to come together in one of the numerous cafés of the city, choosing from an infinite variety of coffees and appreciating the famous confections of pastry, like Sacher cake and apple pie - all of this in the same elegant and authentic environment as people might have relished centuries ago. You can also spend a nice evening out eating hearty Austrian dishes like the “Wiener Schnitzel” and test local wines in the taverns on the outskirts of town.
Independently of whether you prefer to visit the various concert halls and theaters or rather the fairground in the Prater (Vienna’s chief park) with its famous giant Ferris wheel, or if you just want to go for a walk on the grand boulevards and admire the monuments: a week end in Vienna is worth the time.
As a first opportunity to get to know the city, we offer a trip through the downtown of Vienna on Friday 22, subsequent to the conference. Please state your interest in a sightseeing tour on the registration form!
