The annual meeting of the International Society for the Study of Self-Injury brings together researchers on the topic of Nonsuicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) and self-harm from all around the globe.

We aim for a multi-professional, international, diverse and interdisciplinary exchange on NSSI with clinical as well as research topics covered throughout our meeting. After three years of hosting the ISSS annual meeting online, we are dedicated to meet again in person, as personal communication has always been one of the strongholds of the ISSS.

We decided to welcome you in the city of Vienna with the aim of serving as a hub to involve researchers from different parts of the globe. We are looking forward to welcoming you in Vienna.

The conference will take place at MedUni Vienna/ University Hospital Vienna: Währinger Gürtel 18-20, 1090 Vienna): Lecture Hall 3 and Course room 12 at Level 7. The pre-conference will take place at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (enter at Borschkegasse 4a, 1090 Vienna), which is just around the corner.

The location is situated in Vienna’s 9th district, which is very close to the historic city center.

There are different fees for participating in the conference:

Members:

  • Professional Registration = €200
  • Student Registration = €120

Non-Members:

  • Professional Registration = €250
  • Student Registration = €140

Since there are a lot of different housing opportunities, but few, which are very close to the venue, we would just briefly like to mention that the venue

can be easily reached with the underground U6 (stop: Michelbeuern/ AKH), or the tram number 5 or 43, which opens a lot of opportunities in different price ranges.

Here are some of favourites:

Hotel Boltzmann: within walking distance to the venue, one of the closest hotels with good service an rooms: https://www.hotelboltzmann.at/de/

Motel One: this is a large German hotel chain offering several different locations in Vienna. Rooms are quite cheap, tidy, no-frills, but recommendable. You might want to check out the one at Wien Westbahnhof, since it´s directly situated at U6 and you can hop in there and be at the venue 10 minutes later: https://www.motel-one.com/de/hotels/wien/hotel-wien-westbahnhof/

25 hours: fashionable, with a very nice rooftop bar, directly situated next to the Museumsquartier and the 7th district (where you want to be at nighttime). Within a 20-30 minutes walk or a 15 minutes tram ride to the venue: https://www.25hours-hotels.com/hotels/wien/museumsquartier

Vienna International Airport is a well-connected European hub, that is located a half hour drive outside of Vienna. It is easy to use public transport with S-Bahn or train to Vienna main central station (Wien Hauptbahnhof) or Vienna Meidling station (Bahnhof Meidling), which both connect to a large number of tube and tram lines. This will just cost a few Euros. Tickets are available on machines and on the counter of the Austrian federal railway (ÖBB) on the ground level.

There is also a direct train (the CAT) to Vienna central (Bahnhof Wien Mitte, counter and machines on the ground level) for €15. Be sure to know which part of the city you need to get to before you book your tickets.

A taxi to the city will cost about €50. Pre-booked airport transfers can be booked online (normally around €35-40 from the airport to anywhere in the

city), and will pick you up at the airport (many options available, just google….).

If you are planning an extended stay in Europe, trains can take you to Salzburg (3 hours), Munich (4.5 hours), Prague (4 hours), or Budapest (2.5 hours).

Of course you are here for ISSS, but you might want to spend some additional time in Vienna, so here are some thoughts:

Main attractions include the castle Schönbrunn and the castle Belvedere, as well as St. Stephen’s cathedral and buildings along the “Ring”, a circular road around the city center (including the City Hall, the University of Vienna, the Vienna Opera house, and the Burgtheater). The best way to see the buildings on the “Ring” is to hop on a normal tram (lines 1, 71, or D) with your normal public transport ticket (please don’t fall for the tourist rip-off trams, charging huge amounts for the same route).

If you would like to bring your kids: Schloss Schönbrunn holds the oldest (founded in 1752), still working, zoo in the world (of course up to modern

standards by now). The Prater area holds a permanent fun fair, including the “Riesenrad”, which is also an emblematic sign of Vienna.

For those with a “psych” interest, the Freud museum at Berggasse 19 is close to the conference venue (walking distance), has been freshly renovated and is really worth a visit. Also really close by and worth a visit is the “Narrenturm” (which translates to: “tower of insane people”: https://www.nhm-wien.ac.at/narrenturm), which was one of the first asylums for the mentally ill, built in 1784. It now houses the pathological museums with some gory exhibits. Also within walking distance and between Narrenturm and Freud museum is the freshly renovetd Josephinum, offering  insights into the history of medicine with great exhibits (https://www.josephinum.ac.at/). If this has set you in the typical morbid Viennese mood, you might want to visit the funeral museum (Bestattungsmuseum: https://www.bestattungsmuseum.at/startseite), which also offers great merchandise (including - but not limited to - a Lego funeral set).

Vienna has several other great museums, including top art museums like the Museum of Arts, the Museum of Modern Arts, the Leopold Museum, the Albertina…. They are situated around or in the “Museumsquartier” (in the 7th district), which is a great place to hang around, play boule, and visit cafes and restaurants both during the day, and in the evening.

Vienna is renowned for both wine and coffee so make sure to get a taste of both. As the only capital worldwide with wineries within the city limits, a lot of wine makers offer their own products in so called “Heuriger”, which are simple places, with some only open for a few weeks a year. Many can be found in wine-making districts 17th-19th (places like Grinzing, Nussdorf Neuwaldegg, or Sievering) with great names including Wieninger, Mayer am Pfarrplatz or Jutta Ambrositsch.

Vienna has a lot of traditional coffee houses. Traditional places include the Café Central, Café Sacher or Café Hawelka, all of them being really (!!!) touristy. If you want a bit more reality, check out Café  Bräunerhof or Café Jelinek. If you are looking for a place to go out in the evening, the 7th borough has the largeste density of pubs and you can start at the Museumsquartier.
