Research interests
My main research focus is symptom management in patients living with incurable and progressive diseases. I am the head of the clinical division of palliative medicine, which is the leading study center of the Austrian Palliative Care Study Group (AUPACS). I am a board member of the Austrian Association of Palliative Care. My research focuses on the palliative care of patients (mainly patients suffering from cancer) and families facing serious illnesses, primarily related to the management of distressing symptoms such as cachexia, dyspnea, pain, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting and also to psychiatric symptoms (anxiety, delirium, depression), psychosocial aspects and Medical Humanities. I hold a PhD degree (Doctor of Medical Science) in Mental Health and Behavioural Medicine (PhD thesis: "Psyche at the End of Life: Psychiatric symptoms in patients admitted to a Palliative Care Unit") as well as a Master of Science (MSc) in Palliative Care (Master thesis: Establishing End-of-Life Boards for patients with advanced palliative diseases).
