                                  University Assistant (prae doc) – AI in Dentristy (m/f/x)

With around 6.500 employees and 8.600 students, the Medical University of Vienna is one of the largest top-level biomedical research and teaching institutions in Europe. The University Clinic of Dentistry is looking for a part-time (30 hours per week) University Assistant Prae-Doc (m/f/x). This is a fixed term position/contract for a duration of 3 years. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research team at the Competence Center Artificial Intelligence in Dentistry (https://www.unizahnklinik-wien.at/en/research/research-units/competence-center-artificial-intelligence/) to develop machine learning models for the diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) based on jaw motion time series data. Moreover, the successful candidate will be affiliated with the Comprehensive Center AI in Medicine (https://caim.meduniwien.ac.at/), a collaboration of all AI-focused groups at the Medical University of Vienna, allowing for interdisciplinary exchange.

This project aims to improve the diagnostic accuracy of TMD by leveraging explainable AI approaches on kinematic data collected during functional jaw movements. The candidate will work closely with clinical experts and contribute to the development of novel data-driven tools for personalized diagnostics in orofacial medicine. The project is funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and carried out in close collaboration with industry partner Gamma Dental (https://www.gammadental.com/) and scientific partner VieSID (https://www.viesid.com/), offering valuable opportunities for applied research and technology transfer.

Your Tasks

  • Independent scientific work within an FFG-funded project on AI-supported diagnosis of temporomandibular joint disorders
  • Development and implementation of explainable machine learning models for time series data from jaw motion tracking
  • Close collaboration with clinical experts and partners Gamma Dental and VieSID
  • Processing, analysis, and interpretation of complex biomechanical and clinical data
  • Publication of scientific results and presentation at conferences
  • Participation in the PhD program at the Medical University of Vienna
  • Support in teaching and supervision of students

Your Profile

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Data Science, or a related field
  • Prior experience with deep learning, time series analysis, or interpretable AI is an asset
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, PyTorch/TensorFlow)
  • Interest in translational biomedical research and interdisciplinary collaboration

The minimum monthly salary for this position (Uni-KV, VerwGr. B1) is currently Euro 2,786,-- gross (14x per year) on a part-time basis and may be increased by taking into account relevant previous experience and other salary components related to the specificities of the job.
