Aim of the Course
The scientific evaluation of health care as a whole and individual healthcare services and
technologies is a fundamental element of policy and funding decisions in healthcare systems.
This course aims to introduce the basic concepts and methods of evidence-based healthcare
evaluation through relevant steps from evidence synthesis to outcome, cost, costeffectiveness
and efficiency evaluations both in theory and in practice using applied examples
and practical exercises.


Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be familiar with concepts and methods of evidencebased health technology and healthcare system evaluations including:
-  Literature review, appraisal and synthesis incl. meta-analysis
-  Methods for economic evaluation (outcome, cost, cost-effectiveness)
-  Healthcare system performance assessment

Module 1: Introduction
Module 2: Review and critical appraisal of evidence


Day 2 / 09:00 – 16:00
Module 3: Evidence synthesis using meta-analysis
Module 4: Evaluation of costs
Module 5: Evaluation of outcomes


Day 3 / 09:00 – 14:30
Module 6: Evaluation of cost-effectiveness using patient-level data
Module 7: Evaluation of cost-effectiveness using modelling
13:30 – 14:30 Exam
Exam: Optional exam for ECTS accreditation
