Research interests
Principal fields of research: Biomedical Optics. Low coherence interferometry (LCI) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Pioneering work in these fields since 1987.
Major contributions to these fields: Introduction of the optical A-scan (a one-dimensional image that forms the basic element of an OCT scan) for in vivo intraocular ranging (1990); first demonstration of Fourier domain OCT methods (1995) and demonstration of its sensitivity advantage (2003); pioneering work in polarization sensitive OCT since 2000.
Major awards and honours: Fellow of Optica (2013) and of SPIE (2013); Fritz and Dolores Russ Prize of the US National Academy of Engineering (2017); Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art, First Class (2017).
Main research interests at present: Contrast enhancement and generation techniques in OCT, polarization sensitive OCT, Doppler OCT, multidirectional OCT, ophthalmic imaging.
Techniques, methods & infrastructure
Development of advanced OCT techniques and demonstration in the healthy and diseased eye. Available prototype instruments: various polarization sensitive OCT sytems, multibeam Doppler OCT, multidirectional OCT.
